Understanding the spread

What is the Celtic Cross Tarot spread?

The Celtic Cross is a ten-card spread used to explore a situation in depth. The six cards forming the cross examine the central issue, the influences surrounding it and the movement from past to future. The four cards in the column consider the subject’s present response, the influence of other people, their hopes and the likely outcome.

It is especially useful when a question has several connected parts or when a simpler spread has identified an issue that deserves closer examination. It can be used for relationships, work, decisions and personal situations without treating the future as fixed.

Before you lay the cards

Prepare the reading

The spread is detailed, so a clear question and a consistent reading process will help prevent the individual positions from becoming overwhelming.

01

Frame the question

Choose an open question about one situation. Ask what needs to be understood rather than demanding a fixed prediction.

02

Lay the spread

Place the cards in numerical order using the diagram. Card Two lies horizontally across Card One.

03

Survey the whole

Before interpreting, notice Major and Minor Arcana, dominant suits, Court Cards, repeated numbers and the overall atmosphere.

The ten positions

Reading the Celtic Cross positions

Open each position for a concise explanation. Read the cards in numerical order, while keeping Card One as the central reference point throughout.

The Cross · Positions 1–6

01Situation

The heart of the matter and the central issue being explored. Use this card as the reference point for the rest of the reading, asking how each new card supports, challenges or expands it.

02Conflict

The challenge, tension or opposing influence affecting the situation. This card often sharpens the meaning of Card One by showing where resistance or uncertainty is arising.

03Mind

The subject’s thoughts, beliefs and interpretation of events. Compare this card with the Situation, Conflict and Now positions to distinguish perception from what appears to be happening.

04Driver

The experiences, motives or underlying influences that brought the subject to this point. It helps explain why they are responding to the situation in a particular way.

05Past

Past people, events or lessons that continue to influence the present. Consider not only what happened, but how it still shapes the choices available now.

06Future

The direction in which events currently appear to be moving and the influences beginning to emerge. Treat it as a forecast based on present conditions, not a fixed prediction.

The Column · Positions 7–10

07Now

The subject’s present attitude, emotional state and approach. Compare it with the central cards to see whether their internal experience reflects or differs from the circumstances around them.

08Others

The people, relationships and external influences surrounding the subject. It may reveal support, resistance, advice, misunderstanding or a perspective the subject has not considered.

09Hopes

What the subject most hopes for and, sometimes, what they fear. Read it alongside the Driver and Future to understand what matters to them and whether their present path supports it.

10Outcome

The most likely conclusion if the influences, attitudes and choices shown in the spread continue. It describes the present direction of travel and may change when choices or circumstances change.

Connecting the cards

Read the spread as a story

The Celtic Cross becomes useful when its positions are read together. Move through the cards in order, noticing pairings, contrasts and progressions when you reach the relevant position.

01

Begin at the centre

Read Situation and Conflict together to establish the issue and the tension acting upon it.

02

Read the two axes

Mind and Driver explain thought and motivation; Past and Future reveal movement through time.

03

Move up the column

Now, Others and Hopes show how the subject and their environment are shaping what follows.

04

Test the outcome

Ask how the earlier cards lead to Card Ten and where a different response might change that direction.

The aim is not to explain ten separate cards. It is to show how ten positions combine into one coherent account of the situation.
